Punk Music is Good for Dawah!

I was reading the letter-to-the-editor section of one of your older issues, volume 20 issue 02, when I saw a response to the discussion of punk music and dawah. I thought the response was contradictory and I was quite offended by it as I am a fan of heavier types of music. The letter stated that means for dawah should not be associated with filth, however many Muslim rap bands have formed and are successfully preaching Islam, my mother a fan of one herself.

I believe that rock/punk music is far purer than rap music.A Muslim rock band is going to be pushing the same values of any other genre Muslim band. Punk/rock music contains far less indecent ideas and half dressed women than rap.

I also believe that the idea of "pure" and "clean" music is very opinionated.  As an example the infamous "psychedelic rock" has two different meanings.  In the West, it is a form of music that tries to imitate the effects of hallucinogenic drugs while in the East (Japan a key example) "psychedelic rock" took a change for the better.  Previously known for the drug intake of its performers leaving an impact on the hazy, drugged-out music, Japanese Rock performers tended to be drugfree and adamantly anti-drug. Now rock performers in the East are wearing clothes that push modesty and shyness for both males and females. I think a way to clarify the dawah and music controversy is to look at the musical group itself and see the values they promote. Muslims and non-Muslims listen to a variety of music and if punk rock will help convert non-Muslims and strengthen the belief of Muslims, then there should be no debate on whether its origins were clean.

Assalaam Alaykum Warahmatullahi Warbarakaatuh. In essence we cannot judge music based upon our own intuition or what we feel is appropiate or "clean". Islam has laid out guidelines for everything alhamdulilah including music, and there is numerous evidence from the sahih hadith and the Qur'an stating that music is haraam. The reasons for it being haraam is obvious. In regards to making nasheeds, its not haraam to listen to nasheeds as long as they don't contain musical instruments except for the duff which is the only halal instrument. I myself use to be a fan of rock/metal music (not going into details) and i can definitly say that my live is a lot purer, healthier, cleaner and safer without listening to that type of music or ANY kind of music for that matter as i know first hand the affects it can have on a individuals emaan and also it wastes time, money, makes you look upto celebrities and musicans instead of great leaders and figures of Islam, can be easily influenced by its culture, it becomes your solitude when your sad/depressed or even happy when we should be expressing our emotions by turning to Allaah Azza wa Jal and not towards music.

Even if a person isn't affected by music the way i was and alhamdulilah Allaah has saved me from it, my sincere naseeha to anyone out there is don't get involved with music. FULL STOP. Its a slippery slope. Ma' salaama and keep me in your du'as whoever reads this.

Assalamu Alaikum
The fact that you think a kind of music is purer and more decent than another and that your mother is a fan of this or that type, all this is eviednce to nothing in islam. Actually you should humbly accept to drop this zeal with which you are pushing your argument, or rather' to put more mildly, season your ardour with knowledge of the basics of islamic legislation.
Islam has been gaining members for the last fourteen hundred years by adopting this iconocalstic approach that has simplicity and originality as its core. I have never read in any book that islam gained any converts by misrepresenting itself. Yes, brother, if you use music - any music- to call for islam, you should find another name fro the thing you are going to propagate.

If u say that allowing alcohol will help non-muslim to convert....should we accept it?......they argument given in your massage is amount to Bidah(innovation in religion). It is human nature that we seek our comfort zones and dont want to leave it, just look back in the history when non muslim converted an became the best muslim they dind't need any type of music.

If any one want to be muslim, let him be the true muslim....he may be from a muslim or non-muslim family.....we dont need to comfort him by saying things that are not right.......

We dont need quantity of muslim we need Quality muslims

Allaha knows best!

committing a major sin again, VOL. 23-Issue 12

Q: If I commit a major sin again, after repenting and making Hajj,

does that mean my Hajj wasn’t accepted?

Allah has blessed me with making Hajj this year after a long string of sins, and I resolved to make a real new start. But, unfortunately, I committed a major sin and I have been practically choking to death (with regret) since I committed this sin. Does that mean that my Hajj was not accepted and is there any relation between committing this sin after the Hajj and the validity

of my Hajj?
